CRAIG HEBER
I've lived in Tofino since Xmas 2005, currently work at Treehouse Gift Store and volunteer coordinating caregivers and facilitate the Bairds that are in their 90s, living at home.
I have worked at various retail operations, a resort, ecotour company, vacation rental cleaning and construction since moving to town as well I am a Forest Forager.
Like most in Tofino, I have watched long term rentals disappear as tourism grew, though 'caretaker' suites temporarily made situation better until they too were converted to short term rentals with no enforcement by Council.
I have now joined the 'precariously' housed pool of long term residents who rent and am concerned that the town I choose as home, has no place for me or the majority of voters that face the housing crisis that has been ignored by successive Councils.
I have owned businesses operating in Winnipeg to Connecticut, been a performer in a non profit dance group called Chai and served on the Board.
I took law courses and have an interest in politics and new solutions to status quo government inactivity.
I have strengths in design, creative solutions and a experienced researcher to find new ways to solve problems.
I have an active interest in the Biosphere, Green MICROHOMES and technology and recognize we have a Climate Crisis and we must change to cope and minimize its effects.
I form opinion on facts and speak the truth to others that is not meant personally but to foster better solutions and change minds.
I am running as Council needs an non owner precariously housed Councillor to represent and push Council to focus on the needs of its residents instead of Tourism growth at any cost.
Too many Councils have let Toficians down for too long, I promise to do all I can to ensure this changes.
From affordable housing to child and youth services to Senior Services, Tourism needs to protect and better support the community and it's residents needs, as it is Tofino's most marketable asset .. It's people
