DAN LAW

I’m running for council because I want to serve my community at an ever deeper and more meaningful way.

Throughout my time in Tofino I’ve kept the betterment of community at the forefront of all that I do. As a successful Artist, I strive not only for personal excellence, but also for excellence in the arts community as a whole. Over the past eighteen years I’ve worked extensively with students of all ages, individual artists, and local organizations such as SD 70, PRAS, CBT, MoT, Carving on the Edge, TBF, St. Columba (and more). I’ve partnered with artists, musicians, and film makers on many projects including theatre productions, documentaries, and both local and national public art installations.

In 2013, I earned a Master of Arts degree, and won Regent College’s graduate prize for excellence in the arts. At that time I also worked with the college, creating and delivering interactive lectures to help professors and students alike better understand the role modern art plays in contemporary culture - classes which have since been adapted and used by several non-profit organizations.

In all, I’ve learned to translate my own success into collective community success, embodying the belief that in both art and life, ‘we rise together’.

Before becoming a full time artist, I worked for over fifteen years as a Registered Nurse. During my time at Tofino General Hospital, I served as the BCNU shop steward, and spent many years fighting against budget and service cuts which at that time threatened TGH with closure. I learned that fighting for our community requires strength, determination, and perseverance.

I also worked for many years as Community Health Nurse for the Nuuchahnulth Tribal Council, visiting and serving remote communities up and down the coast. I was part of a small team of local nurses who received special federal and provincial recognition for our outstanding service to First Nations Health during the initial H1N1 epidemic - noting that our small team achieved one of two most successful community emergency epidemic responses in all of Canada. Working for remote coastal communities taught me the essence of community resilience, the need for community collaboration, and the power of grassroots communication. I learned that a small dedicated team working together creatively can achieve great results.

I am also first and foremost a family man. I’ve raised my family in community - and have dedicated the last twenty-five years to helping create a healthy, supportive environment for all families, both locally and abroad. Whether running youth groups, summer camps, hiking trips, environmental efforts, or helping lead various non-profit organizations, I’m dedicated to ensuring all children have a healthy sustainable, future - I’m dedicated to supporting the next generation’s fight for environmental accountability - I’m dedicated to doing all I can to ensure all children inherit a healthy, healed world.

I see serving on Council as progression of my life-long desire to make the world a better place to live - I will serve on Council the same way that I’ve served my family, friends, and my community: with passion, imagination, hard work, and determination.
