Tsunami evacuation route up Rosie Bay

12- Would you support an official evacuation route up Rosie Bay for the people living on Chesterman/Cox Bay? Could the town work with Rosie Bay estate to create a little shelter up the hill with food and water in case of a massive earthquake that wouldn’t allow enough time to drive to the community hall.

12- Tsunami evacuation up Rosie: FAQ

Tom Stere

Absolutely. As a resident of this area we have already created a neighbourhood group with an unofficial evacuation site to service this area. With assistance from our Emergency Management Planner this is a very realistic project.

Stephen Ashton

Yes, this is a reasonable approach.

Stephanie Hugues

Yes

Josie Osborne

Yes, I support the establishment of formal evacuation routes to places like Rosie Bay. As Rosie Bay Estates is private property, we must work with the owners to build awareness and understanding about how important this is, how it will benefit the community, listen to concerns they have, reach an agreement, and ensure that the public will respect any access or route that is established as a result of discussions. There are other opportunities to work with businesses and private landowners to establish caches of supplies and equipment, as has been done in communities like Seaside, Oregon. Not only do these projects help make us better prepared, but they will also create stronger neighbourhood relationships which could be the difference between life and death in an emergency.

Jason Brown

Any move towards making our residents safer in an emergency is a good idea to me and I would be happy discuss this more with Rosie Bay estate and formulate an evacuation point closer then the community hall.

Jarmo Venalainen

I am only one voice amongst us all in Tofino.  I do not live in the Rosie Bay area so it is not within my realm of knowledge to know how an evacuation route up Rosie Bay would help our overall community.  Is it a safety issue of persons in that area?  Do we need a second shelter because the one we have is not large enough for everyone?  Other questions which people in the area would know. For that reason, it is not respectful for me to support or not support it.  I would ask that persons interested collect the info and present it to us all, as all of us would be paying for its creation.

Eric Kingsley

Yes, I would encourage discussion with Rosie Bay Estate and support this idea.

Duncan McMaster

We should be looking at all possible evacuation routes to higher ground areas not just Rosie Bay and establish emergency storage/shelters with basic supplies. However, individuals have to take some responsibility themselves. We all chose to live in a Tsunami prone area, must be aware of the risks and possible consequences.

Dorothy Baert

I support solutions that ensure safety of residents and visitors. We have supported the work of an Emergency Services Co-ordinator and expect that to continue.

Craig Heber

I'd support any plan that saves lives. Council can talk with Rosie Bay to create Shelter but I have my doubts that a gated community would agree to establishing a centre.  Ensuring and educating, locals and visitors to register for phone notifications and streamlining traffic flow to Community Hall maybe a better investment for these people.

Chris Heisterman

Everything needs to be considered when it comes to safety. There is one road from our residents at Cox Bay to Town that is 7km long. A lot can go wrong in that distance and we need to look at all options when it comes to keeping our residents safe.

Britt Chalmers

As the team lead for the ESS/Red Cross/Disaster management team, this is already something we are looking into.  We have applied for grants and have already been successful in many initiatives.  Pop up evacuation spots around town are an attainable goal of ours.

Andrea McQuade

I don’t know much about this particular issue, and don’t feel well versed enough to provide an answer. I do know that official or unofficial, in an emergency we will help one another.

Al Anderson

As a resident of this end of town I have bee through more than on evacuation call and it is not always easy to enter onto the highway in an evacuation event. We have built up our alerting (siren) system over the years and I think further emergency infrastructure is worth exploring. The notion of a tower would have to detailed with some  expertise before I would fully support it. It seems like a great idea but I wonder what it would actually rake to accomplish.
